Magheraboy road closure

May 22nd, 2008

COUNCILLOR Padraig McNally, as Chairman of the Carrickmacross Sewerage Liaison Committee, called an urgent meeting this week to discuss a number of issues relating to the closure of the Magheraboy road, Carrickmacross.

The main item discussed was the danger of the road linking the Magheraboy road to the Drumcondrath road. This road, the Cllr McNally stated is totally inadequate to deal with two-way-traffic. As a result of today’s meeting, a decision has been taken to make this one way traffic only for the duration of the work.

In addition to this change, immediate hedge cutting will take place to improve the safety on the above road. All road users will have to use the Kingscourt road to access the Magherross area. The Contractor has also agreed to deploy a second crew on the Magheraboy road, in an effort to speed up the work needed.

Cllr Matt Carthy has said that common sense has prevailed as a one way system has been put in place for traffic diverted as a result of the closure of the road.

Cllr Carthy commended the council’s representatives on the sub-committee overseeing the works, Noel Keelan and Padraig McNally, who pursued the matter. Cllr Carthy also reiterated his call that all possible be done to ensure that the works at Magheross be completed as speedily as possible to facilitate all users but particularly the businesses on the road who are suffering as a result of the ongoing works.

Cllr McNally commended the Contractor for their co-operation in the above matter but said it was necessary to make and have changes in order to improve safety. The Garda Síochána is involved and has agreed to police the one way system initially.

Cllr McNally also reminded the committee that they must not loose sight of the fact that there are a number of businesses dependent on people being fit to access them in a safe manner.
